I took this photo during my lunch break today before a thunderstorm rolled in. I came home from work to find my greenhouse structure toppled to the ground, plastic ripped and metal twisted. It’s my fault for buying a cheapo, but it was what I could afford at the time. Thankfully the shelves holding my [...]

I never have enough soil. I’ve bought bags, bought it by the yard and even made my own and I never have enough. Since I don’t till, I have to rely heavily on compost for lasagna garden beds. It tends to run out, even when I steal leaves from the side of the road. I [...]

As I sit and peruse seed catalogs, I think about several things. As an avid home gardener, I want to experiment with growing as many things as I can from seed, both in the greenhouse and through direct sowing. As a commercial gardener, I try to maximize my space and plant only things that will be [...]

I don’t think anything was killed. The electricity blinked for a second last night while I was sleeping, causing the safety switch on my heater to trip. The temperature in the greenhouse was 30 degrees F this morning. Not what I wanted to wake up to. All I could do was turn on the heater and [...]

When I posted at the end of June about planting several hundred gladioli, I never expected I would be gone more than two months before posting again. Most of the glads have either bloomed or are about to, and they have been a real late summer treat. I do have pictures, but I haven’t had [...]

I haven’t seen such a beautiful day in many months. It’s warm, windy and the sun is shining. I have been outside planting seeds and taking pictures. I planted Janie Spry marigold, Dasher Mix zinnia, and some Profusion Cherry and Apricot zinnia. I also put out some seed for hollyhocks just to see what happens. [...]

The first official day of spring is three weeks from today. Three weeks! Are you ready? Despite the fact that Spring really doesn’t get into full swing until early April around here, there are still things that can be done – and planted – in the yard. Depending on what USDA Zone you live in, [...]

I’ve decided to grow some winter greens in my flower bed instead of it lying dormant and bare all winter. I picked up lettuce, spinach and broccoli seed today and had already begun to clear out the flower bed in front of the house. All the mulch I put down this summer has completely disintegrated [...]

Even gardening isn’t immune to current fashion trends. This season is geared toward bright colors, jewel tones, and graphic black and whites. If you are looking for a simple way to expand your growing season, or need a unique gift, container plants are the way to go. When you hear “lifestyle gardening” that simply refers [...]

After a couple of very dry and very hot weeks, it has finally begun to rain a little. A thunderstorm blew up this afternoon, and has slowed down to a good soak. Finally! Watering has been a constant in my life the last month, and as much as I enjoy gardening, watering is NOT my [...]
