Backyard Grown Gardens is a continuation of the “Backyard Grown” site I had years ago.  Unfortunately, I let the domain name go, and now it belongs to someone else…. My name is Jennifer, and I currently live in Mississippi with my daughter, pets, and a few ‘possums in the backyard. I have been a gardener for as long as I can remember, and have developed a passion for gardening over the past few years. I’m a self-taught amateur horticulturist, if there is such a thing.

In this site you will find my Habitat Project, my gardening blog, photos of my projects, and advice to start or continue your gardening path. I have changed the focus of the site somewhat over the past year by incorporating my cut flower business, but the site is still a resource for the home gardener at its core.  Because my personal and commercial gardening are so intertwined, it’s hard to separate them here!

The Habitat Project started as a small butterfly garden in front of my porch, and has now grown into something much more.  The ongoing news about the decline in honeybee populations has spurred a project that is aimed at providing habitat (food, shelter) for bees, hummingbirds and butterflies.

I contacted my local USDA office, and they have no funds available for WHIP (Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program) this year, and who knows about next year.  It just doesn’t seem to be a priority, and the people in the office don’t seem to be very informed.

This site is run as a resource for gardeners, a web site for my business, as well as a personal gardening blog and journal.  I hope you find the information useful, and if there’s anything else you’d like to see just let me know.

~Jennifer
