Christmas is over, and the days are getting longer one minute at a time. Everything in the greenhouse is growing and looking great, despite the high wind and freezing weather. I’m putting together seed, plug and plant orders to send in, and fielding questions from potential customers. 2010 looks to be a good year.
I only hope the rainfall is moderate instead of excessive like it was last year. It rained practically non-stop for months at a time and was scorching hot in the middle of summer with no rain. Then it started raining again in August and continues to do so.
Because there is a holiday next week, I had to go to my “real” job for a few hours today to make sure everyone gets paid on 12/31. I say “real” job because it’s the most steady income with good insurance. It certainly isn’t as hard as the work I do in my greenhouse and gardens, but my 9-5 activities are my source of funding. I hope to scale back to just enough hours next year to keep my insurance and be able to devote more time to the business.
What I have learned in the last year is that I need to take more bouquet pictures, rather than macro shots of single flowers. A customer asked me the other day if I had any pictures, and I thought Yes, but not any good bouquet pictures. I’m often so busy gardening that I dont’ have time to stop and gather a bouquet and then take a picture of it. Since this is my first official commercial year, I’m going to cut myself a little slack.
One thing I have vowed to do is make a sample bouquet of every customer’s order to add to my portfolio. Although I only grow the flowers, it wouldn’t be any trouble to make up a small bouquet to snap a picture of and also send to the bride for inspiration.
I’m looking forward to a great year in the garden!
