I managed to drag the storage box out to the greenhouse and fill it with soil. Prepare yourselves…

lettuce-box-experiment

A box of soil! The box measures approximately 39″x22″ by 6″ deep.  If you missed the earlier post explaining my project, here it is.  I decided to nix the tomatoes and cukes until I can get a bigger heater. I am thinking about snow peas though!  Right now the greenhouse is staying a chilly 50 degrees F, unless the sun is out. When that happens the temp shoots up as high as 90.  As winter progresses it will get harder to heat, but I have cold weather crops and perennials in there right now, so they will be fine.  When I get ready to start annuals and veggies I’ll need to add some additional heat.  I’m thinking about getting heat mats, but haven’t made a final decision on that yet.

Tonight I planted Looseleaf Blend and Burpee Bibb lettuce in one half, and a short row of Evergreen Bunching Onions in the other half. There’s still plenty of room for carrots and radishes.  The radishes will be planted in front since they mature quicker.  I may invest in another container when I have to start thinning the lettuce so I can just replant what I know I won’t eat.  On a whim I planted an entire separate flat of chives with some leftover seed. I have two nice clumps of garlic chives already, but I really like the pink flower of plain old chives.

Some more shots from the greenhouse:

Dianthus barbatus ‘Sweet’

liatris-spicata-seedlings

Liatris spicata that I started several weeks ago from seed I saved off my plants. I can’t wait to see 72 of these in bloom!

white-crane-kale

White ‘Crane’ flowering kale, started at the same time as the liatris. I also have pink. These make unusual, but pretty, additions to bouquets and arrangements.

I hope you have enjoyed this short walk through my greenhouse. I’ll be back with more pictures when the lettuce starts sprouting!
