I decided to try my hand at growing agapanthus from seed.  I didn’t read any advice about growing them, lest I be disappointed in my own efforts.  I sowed the seed about six weeks ago, and I’m just now starting to see germination. Of eighteen pots, I have four sprouting.

I nearly gave up on them.  I dutifully watered and checked on them every couple of days, but I had a few chilly nights in the greenhouse that probably  hindered germination.  I now have the tray situated above the heater, so it’s getting bottom heat.

If you decide to start agapanthus from seed, don’t get discouraged. Now that I’ve read some more info about them, it seems they not only take a while to germinate, but also have a low percentage of germination. They will also take several years to flower from seed.  This is certainly not a plant for someone who enjoys short term return from starting seeds.

I’ll keep you posted!

I have some agapanthus seed, glad to see how long it takes to germinate. I should have already started them. I gathered these elsewhere off some really huge plants. I don’t mind the wait, I just want to see them grow.
