It has been a busy month to say the least. As November approaches and I look back on all the work I’ve done, I realize how far I still have to go to be ready for Spring. I’ve planted over 600 bulbs so far with at least 2,000 more to go once Spring arrives. I still have a few fall planted bulbs to get in the ground, but the important ones are put to bed for winter. There is still plenty of work to do in the field and greenhouse, prepping beds and sowing seeds this winter.

This is small potatoes compared to what large growers plant every season, but I like it that way. I don’t have the time or resources to farm my whole 8 acres. I want my expansion to be slow and manageable and try not go broke the first year. This includes keeping my full time job until I can completely support my family with the flower farm. I’m exhausted, but the work is so rewarding and I absolutely love it. If I can only service one florist and a handful of brides my first year, so be it.

The rain has been absolutely miserable with no end it sight. When I can’t work outside, I try to get something done in the greenhouse, or wash a load of laundry. Despite the fact that I’m busy, we still need clean clothes to wear to work and school! There never seems to be enough time in the day. With Daylight Saving Time ending this weekend, my work will be confined to the greenhouse during the week and field work on the weekends. I also need a dumptruck full of soil and mulch, but I don’t have a dumptruck. Someday, but not today.

One of my favorite parts of winter is poring over all the seed catalogs that come in during December and January. There’s nothing more comforting to me than sitting down with a hot beverage and flipping through the brightly colored pages while dreaming about Spring and Summer flowers. Then it’s back to reality and back to work.
