Today was a tiring day. In addition to working my regular job, I had to leave early to take my daughter to her dance class and run a million errands. After all of that, I came home to prep and plant 115 calla lily bulbs for early spring flowers. They are tucked away in a bed of deeply amended soil, mulch and pine straw to keep them safe this winter. Of those, 100 are a variety called “Crystal Blush” that are absolutely beautiful in bridal bouquets. They open a pure white and mature to a light pink blush over time. The other 15 are the plain old “Aetheopica” that get very large and have stunning white blooms. I’m hoping these will bloom around the same time as the white tulips I’m planting (as soon as they arrive).

Though I don’t have any notions of cornering the wedding market here, I do hope to help out the DIY bride that is trying to save a little money and still have gorgeous flowers without having to grow them herself.

Also coming up for spring are sweet peas in several different colors, which look and smell fantastic in bouquets. I have some seed that is several years old I’m testing for germination and I’m getting ready to order some old-fashioned varieties from Renee’s Garden Seeds. I anticipate these will be ready in early April and continue until the heat is just too intense. I imagine the beds will have to be prepped soon as they will be planted outside in January.

Though I don’t expect much performance from the ranunculus corms I’m ordering and planting this fall, they should put on a spectacular show next year and in the years to come. Later in spring and on into summer I will have tulips, daffodils, lavender carnations with red stripes on the petals, larkspur (if the seed germinates!), delphiniums, thousands of gladioli, daisies of every color, Asiatic lilies in a rainbow of shades, zinnias, and filler flowers that will go with anything. I’m testing some old-fashioned varieties of roses to see how well they do here, but I don’t plan to devote a lot of growing space to them. I hope to have something blooming as long as the weather is favorable.

If you know you are going to need wedding flowers for Spring or Summer 2010, I can grow in-season flowers for you at a fraction of the cost of having them shipped from California. If you are in the Batesville, Mississippi area you can pick up or have flowers delivered within a reasonable radius. Give me a call at 662-609-6509 or send an e-mail and let’s see what we can come up with!
