As we speak I’m ordering 350 gladiolus bulbs. Yes, you read that correctly – 350! I got such a good deal on them, that I just couldn’t pass it up. There is a method to my madness, however…

I’ve made the decision to go full force with my cut flower business next year, and this is just the beginning. I also have about 50 Vermeer lily bulbs in my fridge waiting to be planted, shasta daisies that are growing and will be ready for next spring, echinacea and liatris seed sprouting, and glads that I’ve planted over the last few years that are going strong. I’m going to be a busy girl next spring!

Now the question is, do I sell at the farmer’s market the next town over, get a permit to set up on the square, or sell them from my front yard? I’m going to have to do some research and see which will be the most cost effective for me. I would prefer to sell from my yard, but there are insurance issues to consider. I also live in a rural area, and don’t know that people would be willing to drive that far for cut flowers. Selling to local florists has always been a dream of mine, but with a full time job during the week it’s difficult to run a wholesale business. I’d hoped to grow custom batches for people who need flowers for weddings, but the timing is a big issue. There are a lot of factors to consider, and I’m weighing each option carefully.

I’m starting fairly small, just in my front yard for now. I have several acres behind the house that I hope will eventually become my growing fields. That definitely requires more time or money than I have at the moment!
