As I gear up for selling fresh herbs and cut flowers, I have been planning several beds. I have one herb bed, and one cutting bed that I’m working on this week. If you haven’t already tried the Garden Planner at Better Homes and Gardens, give it a shot. It’s a lot of fun! Here is an image of the herb bed I was playing around with:

Herb Bed Plan

1. Lavandula angustafolia ‘Munstead’ – Lavender
2. Rosmarinus officinalis ’Barbeque’ – Rosemary
3. Allium schoenoprasum  – Chives
4. Salvia officinalis – Sage
5. Hibiscus syriacus ‘Sugar Tip’ – Hibiscus (decorative only)

The bed will be a little more free-form than the plan sugests, and it’s not to scale, but it gives me some idea of how many plants I need to order, and where to place them when they come in. Before I do anything I have to prep the bed by removing grass, amending the soil with cow manure and sand, and putting down a little mulch for weed control. My soil has high clay content, so I have to amend it with some sand for drainage.

The bed is in front of the house, on a slope that slopes toward the house, so the space between this bed and the bed that is planted right beside the house will serve as a path. The lavender will be nice on the edges for easy access. I like all herbs equally well, but I have to say that lavender is one of my favorites, right up there with basil.
