I’ve made some baby steps toward starting the Habitat Project. I ordered one pound of crimson clover seed (Trifolium incarnatum) today, with plans to sow it this fall. By then the grass will be good and dead from our long hot summers, and I can crop it pretty short and sow the clover.

I also got Oenothera speciosa (showy evening primrose) and Nemophila maculata (five spot). My hope is that these low growing flowers will take over a good portion of the hard-to-mow spots near the ditch and provide plenty of nectar for my insect friends. I also hope that they will readily re-seed themselves and spread as the years pass.

This is just the first baby step of many! I also have perennial and herb beds going in, a small portion of which I hope to be host plants.
