Turning a Passion Into a Living?

It has been my dream and goal for many years to “live by my spade.” I’ve made some decisions about where I want this life to take me and vice versa. I believe that a path in the garden is the only true path for me. This is a wonderful dream, and one that I hope will be a reality in the near future. I can’t afford to open a full-scale plant nursery and garden center, but I would like to specialize in growing herbs and vegetables. I would also like to teach others how to do the same.
With all of this in mind, I look at the economy and I’m very thankful that I have a regular full time job that pays the bills and offers fantastic benefits. I can’t say that the work I do fulfills me on any level, other than having moderate financial security. What I see everywhere are people like me who are struggling to make ends meet, strike a balance with work and life, and improve their lives in the process.
“Why not work in a greenhouse?” you say. I have worked in a greenhouse, and I loved it. The sad truth is that type of work rarely pays a single parent enough to make ends meet. There are always exceptions, but I’ve yet to find a job in a greenhouse that would tempt me to quit my job with regular pay, benefits, and no physical labor. So, I will try to work for myself. I could supplement my self-employed income with a part time job at a nursery, and that is an option for the future.
Is it possible to turn a hobby into a job and make a living? I’m optimistic that it is a possibility, and that someday I will be able to “live by my spade” instead of sitting behind a desk and lamenting the fact that I can’t be outdoors. I made the decision last week to offer on site services to test the waters. I’m not out any additional money, and I believe my services would be valuable to the right audience. It’s the first step of what I hope will be many more.
