I haven’t seen such a beautiful day in many months. It’s warm, windy and the sun is shining. I have been outside planting seeds and taking pictures.
I planted Janie Spry marigold, Dasher Mix zinnia, and some Profusion Cherry and Apricot zinnia. I also put out some seed for hollyhocks just to see what happens. I managed to get hollyhock seed to germinate in a pot last year, and dug up the root last week to put in the flower bed. I shall report my findings if there are any.
Here are some of the pictures I took today:
I picked up some 9-packs of lettuce at Walmart last week, and stuck a few in the flower bed. They are looking great so far! I have three of these Romaine plants set out. I also picked up a pack of Red Sails lettuce. I can’t wait for some fresh salads in a few weeks!
This is a euphorbia called “Tiny Tim.” These are related to poinsettias, and the short day length of winter triggers blooming. Small lime-green blooms are budding as we speak. This one has been a beautiful mixture of purple, burgundy, lime and evergreen all winter. I will be digging this up when I move.
Here are some of the echinacea coming up again. These beauties have yet to fail me in the three years I’ve been in this house. They are tall with stiff stems and make great cut flowers. Bees and butterflies love them, and even the seed pod is interesting.
Broccoli that I planted in September. This is the only thing that survived of the broccoli, lettuce and spinach that I planted, and it looks as though it might actually produce something edible soon. I don’t recommend direct sowing broccoli, but rather starting it indoors in a seed tray. I think I would have had better luck with that method. Nonetheless, I will have fresh broccoli soon!
