There was a time when people grew all their own food, instead of relying on supermarkets, farmers’ markets and restaurants to purchase from. I hope to see an upsurge in home gardeners and community gardens as the economy ticks lower, and groceries become too expensive for some people.

When you think “home vegetable garden” do you immediately think of a multi-acre plot? Do you think “I don’t have the time, space or resources to grow my own food…”? Even if you just have balcony space in an apartment, there are some things you can grow if you have sufficient sun exposure.

Next week I’m beginning a series about frugal gardening that will cover everything from pot (that’s flowerpot) culture to more ambitious home gardens that require a little space. Even if you don’t have a garden, per se, you can supplement your grocery purchases with greens, tomatoes and herbs.
