The first official day of spring is three weeks from today. Three weeks! Are you ready? Despite the fact that Spring really doesn’t get into full swing until early April around here, there are still things that can be done – and planted – in the yard.
Depending on what USDA Zone you live in, now is a good time to plant potatoes, snow peas, carrots, lettuce
, beets, cabbage, greens, spinach
, turnips, broccoli, kale, parsnips, radishes, and some early spring flower seeds, bulbs, and plants. Pansies and ornamental kale are popular and will add a little burst of color to your yard. Check the back of your seed packets to see when the ideal planting time for your Zone is.
If the snow and ice have passed you by for the year, get out there and pick up any brush and fallen limbs that may snag your mower. If you have a chipper/shredder, or can rent one, shred your yard debris for compost or mulch. Otherwise, find out if your city has a yard debris pickup policy and place it curbside for pickup.
Start or turn over your compost pile. If you don’t already have a compost pile, why not get started now? If you start now, you will have some compost ready to use by summer when the soil will be in need of a boost after a long spring of growing and blooming. If you do have a compost pile, it’s time to get out there and turn it over. I tend to let mine lie dormant in the winter, and give it a few good turns before Spring gets going.
Get out there and take some pictures! This time of year, everything is getting ready to burst into bloom where I live. Even if you live in the frozen North, the bare branches and seed pods are interesting enough to photograph. The thing I love about gardening is that there is always something to do, no matter what time of year it is. Even if that something is flipping dreamily through seed catalogs, or planning a new flower bed for spring, gardening can keep you occupied every day if you let it.
