What I'm All About:
I grow cut flowers for brides and florists, but I also blog my gardening adventures as a commercial and home gardener. I primarily grow perennials in an effort to create a habitat for bees, birds, butterflies and other critters, but I also grow some favorite annuals every year from purchased or saved seed (or both!). In these pages you will find a mixture of advice, rants, growing information for flowers and herbs, links and resources, photo albums, and everything in between.
I live in Batesville, Mississippi, Zone 7B, so what I do in my garden may not necessarily work for you.
If there is anything you would like to see added to the site or have any gardening questions you think I can answer, please feel free to send me an e-mail. See my About me page for more info.

The first official day of spring is three weeks from today. Three weeks! Are you ready? Despite the fact that Spring really doesn’t get into full swing until early April around here, there are still things that can be done – and planted – in the yard.
Depending on what USDA Zone you [...]

I have run across several articles, and an NPR radio spot, this week that mention the availability of funds for “greening” an existing home. While I applaud any efforts of the government to help people lower their energy costs, increase their comfort, and promote environmentally friendly energy alternatives, I view this with a hint of [...]

Although there isn’t much blooming in my yard this week, there is always something going on in the garden. Textures and shapes abound all year, and right now things are starting to bud and bloom all over this area. My mother’s daffodils and crocus are in full swing right now.
I snapped a couple of pictures [...]

I will be moving to another state by June of this year so my habitat project is on hold until I get into a new house. While the new location will not have the available land I have now, I still have a goal to turn whatever piece of the earth I have into a [...]

For the past 9 months or so I have been enrolled in online classes with the goal of someday going to nursing school. Fall semester of 2008 was great, (but there were no posts from September until now) and I came out of a full time semester with 2 A’s and 2 B’s. [...]

Well, planning to anyway. I will be in Little Rock next weekend, and my plan is to attend the show on Saturday afternoon, take lots of pictures, and maybe even find a job while I’m there. Finding a job is a secondary goal, but it can’t hurt to ask.
At any rate, I’ll post [...]

I’m pleased to announce that Backyard Grown Gardens now has a Discussion Forum. Unfortunately, I was not able to bridge the member list from here to the forums, so membership there will require a separate registration.
I want to keep the boards fairly small and easy to navigate so no one gets lost. That’s [...]

Even if you don’t have a yard, you can grow vegetables on your patio or balcony. Seed sellers have learned that apartment and condo-dwellers like fresh vegetables too, and sell a variety of seed that is suitable for pot culture. I’ve included a list of varieties at the end of this post for reference. Herbs [...]
