Winter Vegetables

I’ve decided to grow some winter greens in my flower bed instead of it lying dormant and bare all winter. I picked up lettuce, spinach and broccoli seed today and had already begun to clear out the flower bed in front of the house.
All the mulch I put down this summer has completely disintegrated due to all the rain we’ve had, and the soil looks great. It was easy to weed, and the texture of it is divine.
The sunflower bed will also be cleared (sometime soon, I hope) in preparation for late winter sowing of snow peas, carrots, lettuce, spinach, radishes, broccoli, and brussels sprouts. I will probably remove all the dead flowers and grass and mulch it with compost so it can break down over the winter. That’s the plan, anyway.
I thought about erecting the remnants of my greenhouse over the bed to keep it warm all winter, but I’m not getting into that much effort. I may change my mind once I’ve spent a fortune on propane to heat the house and I can’t afford to buy greens this winter!
I’ll keep you posted.
